The Blue Flag Program - Arenas del Mar

Since 2006, the beach located in front of Arenas Del Mar (known as Playitas) has coveted the prestigious Blue Flag (Bandera Azul Ecolgica) award. This program, based on a similar model developed in Europe, works towards the sustainable development of Costa Ricas beaches through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and other services.

Whenever you see a Blue Flag located on one of Costa Rica beaches, you will know that the surrounding community is working rigorously to better its:

Water Quality by assuring that sea water is suitable for swimming and other recreational activities.

Waste Management, assuring that no untreated waters go directly into nearby steams and oceans, and that a recycling and trash collection program is in place.

Environmental education by providing workshops and training to students and the surrounding population.

Safety and administration, assuring that beaches are safe for the general public.

The Bandera Azul is a volunteer certification that incorporates both private and public sectors. In the case of Playitas Beach specifically, Arenas Del Mar has taken a leadership role in obtaining certification. During your stay, we ask for your cooperation in maintaining our beaches clean and pristine. Thank you!

AGREEMENT HOTEL CASA TURIRE –ICE & FITNESS TRAIL

Just a few days ago, Hotel Casa Turire had the opportunity of signing a new agreement with ICE, who is in charge and management of all the lands surrounding La Angostura Lake, a hydroelectric project located just a door step from our hotel and surrounding our property on the north and south sides.

The ICE has two hydroelectric projects in cascade, Cachi and Angostura Lakes, which both together generate 277 MW per hour and provides 38% of the national hydroelectricity.
This agreement allows us to built two trails one of 1.5 kilometers and the other 2 kilometers of length.

First trail, 1.5 km. Will have emphasis in ethno-botany, as matter of fact, information concerning how plants are used as medicine for humans, whether it has been studied or is information passed from generation to generation as a cultural practice.

This trail will have the modality of Auto-guided trail, therefore clients will have the chance to purchase the booklet at our reception and follow the stations at their own pace.

Second trail, 2 km. It is focus as a new approach to nature, “healthy tourism” (vita Parcour fitness trail) we considered it is totally new in Costa Rica and certainly will be followed by many other hotels, perhaps private reserves around the country.

Vita Parcour fitness trail give you the opportunity to stay fit at your level, free of charge, at whatever time suits you. Every circuit features different exercises aimed at muscle training, flexibility and/or endurance. Alternatively, you can simply go for a jog along the sign posted trails.

It consists of 15 stations along the trails and in everyone of them a different exercise to perform, all them marked with colors which indicates the difficulty of it, besides showing the exercise possible for the station. Stations will be built with bamboo and other natural materials found at the property, meaning that the settings will be totally natural.
CIRCUITO DE VIDA.
This idea of enjoying nature as well as the possibility of staying fit without charge was created in Switzerland and the idea was brought to us by Mr. Daniel Allemann.
The name we are adopting for this type of trails will be “CIRCUITO DE VIDA”.
Consequently, we are creating or enhancing the activities our clients can perform at Hotel Casa Turire without leaving our property.

Heliport construcction

In its constant desire to exceed the expectations and to serve our guests in an efficient and fast manner, the Villa Caletas Hotel has begun with the construction of a Heliport.
A heliport is the elevated area or land surface, to be bound for landing, take-off or moving in the helicopter area.
Due to the increase of guests asking for this method of transportation, the heliport will become an effective form to make easy to our guests the arrival at Villa Caletas Hotel in a more fast and efficient way.
At the same time, and because of the appropriate space needed for the construction of a heliport, the presidency and management of the hotel, in its continuous wish and effort of reforestation and respect for our ecological system, has tried above all to maintain its surrounding nature, always keeping its magnificent tropical vegetation.
We will welcome and wait for you to enjoy Villa Caletas with its constant progress, always thinking in the well-being of our guests, letting them feel every time closer to heaven!

      Working for a Sustainable Tourisim

Florblanca’s quest for obtaining our CST (Certificate of Sustainable Tourism) leaves has made us revalue ourselves completely, letting us set a more clear vision of where we want to go and what impact we want to have over our clients, our staff, our community and the environment.

Lucky for us, we have staff in all departments (housekeeping, maintenance, accounting, reception, reservations, security and management), that has the best will to participate and collaborate with the new activities and changes we are developing at Florblanca and Reserva Hotel.

We have taken big steps forward on recycling. We began by focusing on separating the garbage of the hotel. This task required educating the staff, creating infrastructure as well as setting a new plan on managing our solid waste and especially our organic wastes, which we are converting into compost.

After teaching our staff, we started working at a community level. We have proudly helped setup a collection center managed by a local we like to call “Gato”. On June 5th, the international day of the environment, we are kicking off with a recycling program for the communities of Santa Teresa, El Carmen, Hermosa and Manzanillo. Prior to this day, a member of Florblanca’s staff will go door by door explaining the recycling program to the community with brochures and examples of what can be recycled and what cannot be recycled.

Electricity conservation has been also one of our top priorities, therefore; we have just installed solar lights in most of our offices and our kitchen allowing these spaces to be illuminated with natural light from the sun. We have also changed most of our light bulbs to more energy saving bulbs.

At a social level, we have reached out to our community in a number of ways. We have made contributions to paint a school in Paquera, to build the bullring of Cóbano, to help organize the annual sand castle contests in Manzanillo, and to help a 15 year old surfer of our community that qualified get to France for international competitions. Two of our workers volunteered to help MOPT build the bridge from Playa Hermosa to Manzanillo. Florblanca signed a code of conduct rejecting commercial sexual exploitation in travel and tourism. We are happy to sponsor the soccer team of Bello Horizonte, and we also send our maintenance personal for a beach clean up every Friday. Florblanca is committed to its neighbors.

Five Star Guests at Capitan Suizo!

We have the privilege to introduce our two special guests: Alice & Sophie. They are two baby howler monkeys that unfortunately lost their families. Alice was found one morning walking through the hotel garden. We brought her to the veterinary and he informed us that she was brought to him after an (unknown) accident and that he had to amputate the tale because it was very much damaged. Since then Alice is living with us. Her family is visiting Capitan Suizo frequently. When the troop is here, Alice spends some time with the family. For our guests and all of us it’s beautiful to observe it.

A couple weeks later a tourist found Sophie walking alone on the road and after a veterinarian check the hotel took care of her as well. Both of them are very cute and they require to be close to someone as they are used in the troop. A big part of the hotel staff is helping taking care of the two babies. But since this is a fulltime job, the hotel hired a “babysitter” for 8 hours a day to make sure that they feel comfortable and happy at our place and that the hotel is a good home for them until they are strong and skilful enough to join the group one day.

Birds, howler monkeys, squirrels, gray iguanas, armadillos, skunks and raccoons are animals that can be seen almost daily throughout the hotel’s garden since Capitan Suizo is an oasis where it is implicit that nature and animals are integrated with love and respect. This is why probably Julius, a 6 year old guest in Capitan Suizo, called the property “the zoo hotel”.
